Here's a look at the 25 TopColleges in the South:
In addition to its top-of-the-line STEM programs, Rice University, located in Houston, TX, has presidential pedigree, as George H.W. Bush served as an adjunct professor at the school and John F. Kennedy encouraged America to send a man to the Moon at a speech on campus. Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, similarly has a campus that serves as an oasis in a major city, while University of Virginia and Washington and Lee University represent Virginia’s best.
Frequent competitors on the field as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke University and the University of Virginia are not the only ACC schools with highly regarded academics. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill , Wake Forest University , Georgia Institute of Technology , University of Miami , Virginia Tech , Clemson University and North Carolina State University are the other ACC universities in the top 25.
A trio of Texas schools make the list: University of Texas, Austin , Southern Methodist University and Texas A&M University - College Station . Three schools from Georgia also appeared, with Emory University , Georgia Tech, and University of Georgia . University of Florida joins University of Miami as the Florida colleges ranked.
Davidson College , Tulane University and Furman University are all private schools with a growing national reputation. At Davidson, situated in the Charlotte suburb of Davidson, NC, more than 70% of students participate in research or internships, while Furman, located two hours south of Charlotte in Greenville, SC, fosters innovation on campus.
The new schools on the 2019 rankings are Elon University in Elon, NC and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. A private school, Elon emphasizes the need for experiences outside of the classroom, with about three-quarters of students studying abroad while at the university. James Madison is a public university known for its health sciences and nursing programs with a lovable English Bulldog as its mascot.
