Coco Gauff’s schedule is jam-packed, even ahead of a tennis match. The day she won her women’s exhibition match at the Atlanta Open, Gauff letin on her preparation and pregame meetings. She started her day with a workout, which she does six days a week. After some core exercises, jump rope, and practice swings, Gauff headed out for a meeting with New Balance.
Gauff just launched her signature shoe with New Balance last month, and the meeting was to go over some of the design details. The ’90s-inspired shoe is bright white with a gradient on the side and features some special nods to Gauff’s family, including her brother’s names on the laces; a basketball and track on the back of the shoe for her parents; her signature; and her quote “you can change the world with your racket.
Gauff grew up in Atlanta, so playing there allowed her to hang out with her family. “It’s not often I see my whole family that much, especially my brothers,” she says after meeting up with them for lunch. Her dad tells stories of the 18-year-old’s earlier tennis days, focusing on a match where he was the only one cheering for Gauff in the stands. “The only ones cheering against you are the ones you beat and the ones you’re going to beat,” he says.
Then it was time for another quick practice and a meet-and-greet before the match. “It makes you feel like what you’re doing matters,” she says of meeting excited fans. She finished out the day by debuting her new shoes on the court, paired with an iridescent skirt and a peach-and-yellow athletic top. Watch the full video above.
