FREDERICTON, N.B. — This year is shaping up to be another record-breaking year for animal neglect as New Brunswick SPCA reports high numbers of neglect and cruelty cases in the province.

On top of the calls, Porter said there were 365 reports of abandoned pets in the province, more than double the 141 reported in 2022.SPCA consults police over alleged Cape Breton cat abuse The officer also noted that a big reason for animals being abandoned is the impact made by the scarcity of affordable rent.“The last three or four years have put significant pressure on pet owners. They are trying to cope with being able to afford housing, groceries and child care. Sometimes, animals are not the top priority, and they are not being looked after properly.

As a result of many of those calls, the NBSPCA brought 600 domestic pets to animal shelters for rehabilitation and rehoming, including 53 pets that were successfully reunited with their families.
