But the outdoors? That’s only now getting homey, thanks in part to welcoming design options, like luxe performance textiles, that technology has wrought.
“For so long, outdoor fabrics were essentially just plastic,” said Robin Gannon. These days, the Lexington, Mass., designer said, outdoor leathers and velvets rival their indoor siblings for suppleness. Another trend making al fresco spaces snuggly: Sharp-elbowed teak is yielding to rotund silhouettes, which will “soften outdoor hardscapes and invite guests to sit down and stay awhile,” said Ashley Macuga, of Collected Interiors, a firm in San Carlos, Calif.
