This will be Brandon’s third Canada Games during his nine-year tenure with the PEI Wheelchair Basketball team. In both previous cycles PEI has competed well but fallen short of a medal, something Gillis hopes to rectify this year.We lost in the bronze medal both times, but for PEI making it to the bronze my first [Games] was a pretty big thing,” he says. “I would really like to medal this year, team’s looking pretty strong but so are some other teams so it's going to be interesting to see.
Gillis is one of the older players on the roster this time around and in that sees a responsibility to set the tone. “I'm definitely one of the oldest people on the team and I want to try to set examples for other people. There's some fairly young people on our team so I'd like to consider myself definitely a leader for sure.”Gillis is a big fan of the Toronto Raptors, especially their talented young forward Scottie Barnes. He’s just a very versatile player,” says Gillis.
