VW's new Multivan has arrived and we've got the definitive verdict. This big question is, can it do enough to justify the £45k price tag?

In plug-in hybrid form, the Multivan is powered by a 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine, which works in combination with a 114bhp electric motor to produce a combined 215bhp. It certainly makes the Multivan feel fast – especially at lower speeds, where the electric motor’s instant surge of pulling power makes it easy to get away from traffic lights or overtake slower-moving vehicles.

There are also 134bhp and 201bhp 2.0-litre petrols to choose from, with a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel joining the range next summer. We’ve yet to try these, but the lower-powered petrol is likely to struggle on faster roads, especially if you have six passengers travelling with you. You can only have a six-speed automatic gearbox in the plug-in hybrid Multivan, but it does a good job of shuffling you up and down the gears. You can take control yourself using paddles behind the steering wheel, but most of the time we found it best to let the car decide for itself what was best.

Whether you opt for six or seven seats, the entire centre console can be slid backwards towards your rear passengers, where its slide-out tables can be put to use. Those seats can be turned around, too, so your passengers can gaze into each other’s eyes during the journey if they wish. Or you can remove one side of seating entirely, creating a long space capable of accommodating bicycles, bedroom cabinets or anything else you need to transport.

The seats themselves are comfortable and supportive – no matter where you’re sitting – while the optional panoramic sunroof lets in plenty of light.
