Texas' white-tailed deer season opens Saturday and should be a good one despite drought conditions across much of the state.
Drought deteriorated habitat across much of the state and contributed to below average antler quality and poor fawn survival this summer, especially west of I-35 where dry, hot conditions persisted. But for hunters going afield with the start of white-tailed deer season Saturday, plenty of opportunity exists for success.
The big game harvest survey indicates more than 825,000 deer were killed by hunters statewide last year and Cain said he still anticipates a decent deer season this year despite the conditions on the ground. Plenty of big bucks abound and deer are hitting feeders earlier this season because of the lack of natural food sources. In normal or wet years, deer may not start frequenting feeders until mid-November.
These four counties are the only ones in Texas where the only legal means of take is archery equipment, even in the youth, general and Managed Lands Deer Program seasons. Earlier this year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission rejected a proposal that would have added a rifle season. Overwhelming opposition from these communities swayed the commission to preserve the bow-only seasons.
