Jan. 22: Melissa Ortega, 8, was murdered Jan. 8 in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood while holding her mother’s hand. Yes, they fought. And then, their caucus fragmented and enough Latino aldermen caved. To what, you ask? The lure of the backroom deal, where self-interest and, in this case, strong-arming by the unions, took over. The compromise allowed City Hall to avoid a referendum that would have put the fate of the competing Black and Latino caucus maps into the hands of voters, which should have been the destination.
In 1979, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd raced across Chicago’s nocturnal streets while filming “The Blues Brothers.” Dozens of stunt drivers helped “Jake and Elwood” create some of the most thrilling auto-racing footage in cinematic history. For the rest of us, the experience of driving down Lower Wacker Drive would never be the same.
The Bears are a business, and don’t owe any allegiance to taxpayers. But Mayor Lightfoot does. And ahead of the 2023 mayoral election, voters will watch just how fiercely she puts up a goal-line stand in defense of Chicago’s citizens.
