And that’s just in my field.”, the fruit fly, is one of the most studied species. However, the majority of the investigations used samples from modern specimens.
Interestingly, fruit flies captured in Sweden in the early 1800s shared a stronger genetic similarity with modern flies. And much less with Swedish samples collected in the 1930s. Some differences noted in the DNA between the specimens from the 1930s and their contemporary counterparts showcased the appearance of a gene called Cyp6g1. This gene is known to provide enhanced resistance to the pesticide DDT in modern-day flies.
