Maxwell’s arrest is a major breakthrough following Epstein’s death by suicide last August while he awaited trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Following his death, prosecutors vowed to go after co-conspirators, although Maxwell laid low for months. Prosecutors in New York, as well as lawyers representing Epstein victims including Gloria Allred, have put pressure on Prince Andrew to come forward with any information about Epstein’s conduct, although they say he has failed to cooperate.
The royal, who stepped down from senior duties last year over renewed interest in his friendship with Epstein, has denied any wrongdoing. But victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre alleges that she was made to have sex with the royal on three separate occasions. Andrew denies ever having met Giuffre, despite a widely circulated photograph showing him posing beside her when she was 17. Separately, Giuffre last year filed a civil lawsuit against Maxwell, claiming that the socialite recruited her.
