According to a press release provided to TODAY.com by Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup, the toddler — whose name was Jayce D. Griffin — was found unresponsive by his father on the morning of July 22. Soon after, the boy was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department located in Urbana, Illinois.
“At this time, the death of Jayce Griffin appears to be from natural causes pending additional testing and final autopsy results,” the release provided by Champaign County coroner Duane Northrup read in part.NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV obtained a statement from the Bucks head coach“My grandson Jayce was very special to me and my family and his passing is an agonizing tragedy that will be felt forever,” the statement from Griffin reads.
Jayce’s death is currently being investigated by the Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office. Additional information regarding his death will only be released by the office upon completion of the autopsy and death investigation.
