What you wear to a job interview says a lot about you, so you want to make sure your outfit makes a good impression.

Heavy scents are not only overwhelming, but many people have allergies to strong perfumes, colognes, and fragrances. With scent sensitivities becoming a more pressing and widely acknowledged issue, some workplaces are opting to become scent-free, including banning the use of perfumes and colognes. You don’t want to show up drowning in fragrance to a workplace where anything scented is taboo.

If the scent of the fragrance you’re wearing is too strong, there’s a very good chance the hiring manager will cut your interview short, regardless of how qualified for the job you might be. Even if they don’t, it could cloud their judgement. You want the hiring manager to remember you, not your fragrance.

Strong scents don’t just apply to perfume and cologne. Essential oils and body sprays can also be overwhelming fragrances, so be aware of what you’re wearing. For a job interview, it’s best to skip the fragrance altogether and just stick with deodorant. You don’t have to show up in a custom tailored three-piece suit with matching Italian leather shoes, but you do have to wear clothes that fit well with appropriate footwear.

Properly fitting business attire doesn’t have to break the bank. Consignment stores and sample sales are great places to get a deal on high quality clothes at discounted prices. Sometimes it can take a bit of time to go to a multiple stores and try on various options until you find the right fit, but the time is worth it.

Before you wear an outfit to a job interview try it on at home, including the shoes and accessories you’ll be wearing. Sit down and stand up to ensure it doesn’t get wrinkled as you sit or you shirt doesn’t come untucked or any other wardrobe malfunctions. If you have new shoes, walk around in them for a bit to break them in so you don’t end up with a blister on the day of your interview. Regardless of the clothes you wear, it’s important that you feel comfortable in them.
