CARDIFF, UNITED KINGDOM - JUNE 09: Former Conservative MP for Cardiff North Craig Williams looks on at the Sport Wales National Centre on June 9, 2017 in Cardiff, United Kingdom. After a snap election was called, the United Kingdom went to the polls yesterday following a closely fought election.
Britain's Conservative Party said on Tuesday it had withdrawn support from two parliamentary candidates who are being investigated over alleged bets placed on the timing of next month's national election.Craig Williams is shown in a June 9, 2017, file photo from Cardiff. Williams, a close aide to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has been running to reclaim his seat in the Montgomeryshire riding in Wales.
Earlier this month, Williams, a parliamentary secretary and therefore close aide to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, apologized for a "huge error of judgment" in placing a bet on when the election would happen. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attends a Conservative general election campaign event in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Monday. Sunak had said he was 'incredibly angry' over the allegations that Williams and Saunders face. The party said at the time it had been contacted by the Commission "about a small number of individuals." It also said Lee had taken a leave of absence from his role.
Sunak, who took most lawmakers and voters by surprise when he announced the election date on July 4, has said he was "incredibly angry" to hear about the allegations.Reform UK’s Nigel Farage is shaking up Britain’s otherwise fairly predictable election campaign by setting his sights on siphoning votes away from the Conservatives — a strategy he says was modelled after what Preston Manning did in Canada in 1993.
