Elgin Academy, ranked as the ninth best school in Illinois by Niche, is closing its doors at the end of the current school year, ending its 185-year history in the city.
The academy’s school board made the decision Monday, said Paul Druzinsky, interim head of school. No decision has been made on the future of the Elgin Academy campus at 350 Park St. “As you can imagine, there is a range of emotions among the students and parents,” Druzinsky said. “There is lots of sadness at the loss of this great institution.
Overall, the school has seen a 50% drop in enrollment since 2014, Elgin Academy officials said. In the last five years, it lost 100 students. The COVID pandemic played a role in that drop. Enrollment didn’t bounce back and they were down another 30 students going into the current school year, officials said. Graduates of Elgin Academy throw their caps into the air following the 2017 commencement ceremony at the school.
