In light of upcoming Fire Prevention Week, Pennsylvania's State Fire Commissioner Thomas Cook urges all residents to review and practice fire safety.
This year's fire prevention week, which will take place from Oct. 8-14, is themed "Cooking Safely Starts with You: Pay Attention to Fire Prevention". According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires result in over $1 billion worth of direct property damages each year. The lead cause of these fires remains inattentive cooking.
A release from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency says homes today are full of synthetic materials that burn "hotter and faster than ever." The release also states the average fire typically leaves those inside the structure only two minutes to safely escape once the alarm starts ringing.- Never leave the kitchen while you are drying, boiling, grilling, or boiling food before turning off the stove.- Keep flammable cooking materials, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils and food packaging, away from stovetops.“With the holidays right around the corner, it’s more important than ever to note the fire dangers in our kitchens,” Cook said.
