Parks Canada says work is expected to begin later this fall on two projects aimed at mitigating wildfire risk in Banff National Park.
From Nov. 15, 2024, to approximately March 31, 2027, Parks Canada will remove 165 hectares of trees near Lake Louise to create a fire guard to protect the community.
Officials say one of the projects this fall will focus on the Tunnel Mountain area by thinning trees in the area to reduce the fuel load and create a more open forest. Officials call it "a pro-active measure" to reduce wildfire risk to Lake Louise and surrounding communities.
