A 16-year-old student was killed and a 28-year-old woman injuured in Friday’s shooting at a Port Allen High School football game.
The shooting broke out during halftime near the audience stands at Port Allen High School’s football field, according to theTwo people were struck by bullets: a 16-year-old male student and a 28-year-old woman.
A medical helicopter landed on the field and rushed the two victims to the hospital, where the teen was pronounced dead.Police have not made any arrests and have no leads for the violence. “We don’t know what led up to the event and we don’t yet know if it was a targeted shooting or random,” Sgt. Landon Groger said. “We want to take our time and cover this from all angles.”According to the West Baton Rouge School Board, the mysterious shooting happened in spite of increased security stationed for the school’s second game of the season.Port Allen officials announced it would bulk up security during the school day in the wake of the tragedy.
“We have on going programs in our schools that teach students ways to resolve disputes with their peers. We will re-double those efforts and work with the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and others in the coming months to teach our students that violence destroys many people’s lives,” Superintendent Chandler Smith said in a statement to parents.The game was suspended in a 13-13 tie following the shooting.“Our prayers are with everyone touched by this tragedy.
