Greater Victoria saw the third highest number of deaths in the province from unregulated drug toxicity last month, the BC Coroner Service says.
In September 2024, approximately 16 people died in Greater Victoria, 19 in Surrey and 45 in Vancouver last month from unregulated drug toxicity, according to thereleased on Thursday by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
Of the September deaths that underwent toxicolgical testing, findings showed fentanyl was detected in 85 per cent of the cases and stimulants in 81 per cent, according to the report. Between January and September 2024, at least 1,749 people died across British Columbia from unregulated drug toxicity. This shows an eight per cent decline compared to the previous year in that same time period .During the months of August and September, approximately six people died each day from suspected unregulated drugs.Of the 183 deaths across the province from unregulated drug use in September, nearly half of the people were between ages 30 and 49 years.
