Goats will be used to 'mow' the Houston Arboretum in May and clear the way for a more...
Goats eat overgrown vegetation at Houston Arboretum Tuesday, May 3, 2022, in Houston. The goats from Rent-a-Ruminant Texas will “mow” from May 3 through May 10 the 2.3 acre area encircled by the 610 Parking Loop. Rent-A-Ruminant Texas provides a workable alternative to traditional land clearing, chemicals or commercial mowing. The goats are effective at reducing brush overgrowth, green briars, poison ivy, ragweed and other unwanted or undesirable plant species.
The Houston Arboretum is enlisting the help of a goat herd to graze overgrown vegetation spanning 2.5 acres around its Wildflower Trail. As the goats eat the vegetation, it will clear the way for a more diverse and open woodland habitat, Debbie Markey, executive director of the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, said in a news release. The goats’ grazing is an eco-friendly alternative to commercial mowing and herbicides, she said.
The goats are brought to Houston by Rent-A-Ruminant Texas, a company offering the grazing service. Their goats have stacked resumes with experience reducing undesirable plants including brush overgrowth, green briars, poison ivy and ragweed.Depending on their speed, the goats will be grazing at the arboretum for seven to 10 days, before moving onto greener pastures or going back home to their ranch in Brownwood, Texas.
The goats have been to the Houston Arboretum several times in the past to remove overgrown vegetation and invasive plants, Markey said. The goats were last in Houston a year ago when they grazed near the 610 Parking Loop, eating invasive species and other vegetation.
