Still, experts say the early signs are that BA.2.75 could be better at evading immunity built up from vaccination and prior infection than BA.5, which could make it more transmissible – although it is still unclear whether this is the case and how much more infectious it might be.
But even if BA.2.75 struggles to compete with BA.5 initially in the UK it doesn’t mean it – or another future subvariant – won’t supplant it at some point. “There have been few BA.2.75 cases reported outside India so far. Personally, I won’t obsess over BA.2.75, until there is any signal for the lineage going up in frequency in places that have had a sizeable number of BA.2.1.12 and BA.5 infections [which the UK has],” he said.
