In honor of MothersDay, we spoke to designers about the beloved pieces they’ve inherited. Here are their stories.
For many, Mother’s Day will be very different this year. Brunches will be digital, Sunday flower deliveries will be delayed, and the space between moms and daughters will be vast, unless of course you’re quarantining en famille.
I’ve also found myself drawn back to the colorful costume ring my grandmother gave me as a kid, as well as her bold statement belts. I have her to thank for my love of daring fashion. Heirlooms, especially those given to us by the women who raised us, are to be treasured. But in the absence of a typical Mother’s Day, inherited things feel particularly dear. It could be they spark memories of better times, or inspire hopeful thoughts of the future. My mom’s charm bracelet certainly inspired me.
The necklaces around my neck spell out my family history. One is of two girls holding hands, a necklace my grandmother Rose wore until she left this planet. One little girl bears an etching of my name and my date of birth. The other has my sister’s name, misspelled in the same way that my grandmother, with her heavy Polish accent pronounced it .
