Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19, and events are taking place across San Diego County throughout the weekend
The unanimous council vote catches the city up with the federal and state governments, as well as other cities including Los Angeles and San Francisco.Flag-raising ceremony in Chula Vista:
The City of Chula Vista will hold a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate Juneteenth. The flag has been flying since June 1 but will be temporarily removed and raised again at the event. Speakers at the ceremony include Mayor John McCann, Rev. Eugenio Raphael, Shawna Codrington, principal of Fahari L. Jeffers Elementary School, and Petrina Branch, chair of the Chula Vista Human Relations Commission.
This event, started by San Diego businessman and community leader Sidney Cooper Sr., is continued by his family and is one of the largest such events in the region. There will be live music and entertainment, an educational program, food trucks, live gospel and jazz, health and wellness resources, a history wall, a kids zone and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.
