Sharp as a whip, still sporting a thick head of hair, Simpson recounted the stories in his life.
“And many more!” shouted the crowd after singing Happy Birthday in honour of Don Simpson’s 106th on Thursday at Mayfair Terrace in Port Coquitlam. He was born in Edmonton in 1913.
“We took a recent bus trip from this great place and went around False Creek,” Simpson, whose family moved to Vancouver when he was young, said. “I can’t believe the number of highrises today.” Simpson sailed all over the world, circumnavigating both South America and Africa more than once. His last trip was as a 100-year-old, an Alaskan cruise. He built three boats, including the 48-foot Ambler, which the youngest of his two sons still sails.
Simpson attended Vancouver Tech growing up, met his wife-to-be Jean on his way to school and they married in 1940, building a sweet little home at 24th and Slocan, where they lived for 32 years and raised two sons. He has five grandchildren.
