He reclassified from the 2022 class, his original graduation year, to the 2021 class and joined coach Penny Hardaway’s Memphis program at the age of 17.
During the 2021-22 season, Bates averaged a 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds shooting around 38% from the field . After inconsistent play and suffering multiple injuries during season, he transferred to Eastern Michigan for his sophomore season. Bates was arrested before the start of the 2022-23 season on gun charges, though he’d reach a plea deal and have the charges eventually dropped.
He averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 40% from the field . Eastern Michigan finished with a record of 8-23, but Bates was a third team All-MAC selection. Bates made waves via social media for multiple performances during the season, such as his 30 points in a 88-83 loss to Michigan on Nov. 11, Bates’ debut for Eastern Michigan. He also had 29 consecutive points scored in the first half of a 84-70 loss to Toledo, finishing the game with 43 on the night.
