Bystanders reflect on rushing to a fallen soldier's aid, 10 years laterTen years after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while standing sentry at the National War Memorial, some of the people who rushed to his aid reflect on the tragedy and how it changed them.The crisp autumn air that signals falling leaves brings with it a rush of memories for Martin Magnan.
"I felt lost for a long time. I was experiencing the after-effects without even realizing it," he said. "I wouldn't sleep for long periods. I would walk for the entire night. One morning, I woke up in a park.Martin Magnan stands near the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Ten years ago, he was among a group of bystanders who rushed to Cpl. Nathan Cirillo's aid when the soldier was gunned down while standing sentry there.
Others were asking themselves the same question. "Everybody came literally from a different direction," Lehre said. "Your military family loves you," Winters told Cirillo. "Look at these people, we're all here helping you. We're all trying to do what we can for you. We all love you."", 'I don't think you realize how your life is going to change because of this moment,'" Lehre recalled.
The January after the shooting, Lehre finally took the retirement she had long contemplated and volunteered with. She has now served with the charity in more than a dozen countries, including conflict zones.
