The provincial government announced Monday that 10 more speed cameras will be installed throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in a multi-phase approach.Digital Government and Service NL says the province will issue a request for proposals in the coming months for a vendor to manage and installing the cameras.
Proposed amendments to the Highway Traffic Act will also begin second reading in the House of Assembly to allow the vendor to issue tickets electronically. The department says tickets will be handed to the registered owner of the vehicle, while demerit points cannot be issued when caught by the cameras. Those who fail to pay their fines will be subject to the same existing regulations as someone issued a ticket from an officer.
A similar approach is planned to identify cars speeding in construction and school zones, cars passing school buses with the stop arm extended, and red-light infractions. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
