A lethargic first half doomed the Bulls to a 112-103 loss at the Sacramento Kings Monday night.

A lot of ugly statistics stand out from those first two quarters — 11 turnovers, 13 second-chance points allowed, and so on. But the Kings’ 28-10 advantage in paint-points was among the most telling. They took it to the Bulls every time down the court, which led to everything from layups, to post buckets, to second-chance points, to kick-outs to open jump-shooters.

“I gotta do a better job of just my mentality. I’m going out there, I’m playing through some pain in my knee, but I gotta have the right mindset,” LaVine said. “I can’t tip-toe into the game. It’s my first game back, I could put excuses out there, but I put that on myself. I made a mental decision in that second half to go out there and play like me, and I gotta start off that way.”

LaVine has conceded he will likely play the rest of the season at 70-80 percent of full health. But if the second-half version of him is still accessible, the Bulls need it more often. But that shot rimmed out, and the Bulls shot 6-for-18 in the final eight minutes of the game, including 1-for-8 from 3-point range. It takes a lot of energy to mount comebacks like this one, and it’s not the first time the Bulls have done so and run out of gas just as they sought to get over the hump. It’s a theme LaVine and Vučević spoke urgently about correcting postgame.
