5 Lord Hidetora Ichimonji 'Ran' The filmography of Akira Kurosawa, without a doubt the greatest Japanese director who has ever worked on the Seventh Art, is full of interesting characters. One of the most fascinating is Lord Hidetora, the protagonist of Ran, a period drama inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear, where an old warlord retires and hands over his empire to his sons, vastly underestimating how much power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on their family.
