Police say over 1,500 cell phone accounts across Canada were compromised. They're warning the public how to protect themselves against the scam, where criminals impersonate cell phone users to gain access to online accounts.Toronto police say 10 people are a combined 108 charges for allegedly defrauding telecommunications companies, banks and cell phone users of over $1 million total in a SIM swap scam.
The fraud cost victims, telecommunications companies and financial institutions over $1 million combined, police said. Det. David Coffey, left, and Det. Const. Michael Gow, right, tell reporters about Project Disrupt at a news conference Thursday. Coffey said over 1,500 cell phone accounts across Canada were compromised in the SIM swaps police were investigating.
When a SIM swap occurs, he says, victims lose cell service and see an "SOS" symbol instead of bars. If criminals switch the SIM card back to the victim's phone, Gow says, they might not connect the temporary outage to any fraudulent activity they then discover on their accounts.
