Gayle MacDonald has compiled a record 10,000 volunteer hours at the P.E.I. Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown since 1974. She has spent the majority of that time washing patients’ hair. - Dave StewartCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Gayle MacDonald said nothing makes her happier than going into the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown every Thursday to wash patients’ hair.

MacDonald, who had no previous experience washing other people’s hair, and another volunteer got some shampoo and other essentials together and did the patient’s hair. Then, the woman in the next bed asked to have her hair washed. “She is so caring and kind,’’ McQuaid said in a telephone interview on Dec. 22. “She is such a natural caregiver, someone who is full of life. When she walks in the room, she makes you feel very important. She makes you feel like you’re number one. It’s an honour just to be in her presence. And, when you’re in the hospital, it’s such a lift to get your hair done. It’s such a big boost to your spirit.’’Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Sitting down with a good book.
