"The 'Beyond the Basics' is a resource for educators on sexuality and sexual health. It is basically a trojan horse brought into the schools under the guise of creating a sex-positive, anti-oppressive learning environment, but really it is meant to sexualize children at the earliest age possible." "The march is basically set up to protest the teaching of what they call gender ideology in schools. What it really means is that they're looking to stop the pieces of teaching that allow children to know who they are," Merryfield said. An advocate for transgender rights, Merryfield is also a transgender educator who does presentations in both businesses and schools. Through personal experience, Merryfield knows what harm can come to trans youth who grow up in homes that don't accept non-heterosexual people. These harms include mental illness like depression, addiction and suicide.
