Outstanding golf, snorkelling, paddleboarding and hiking provide strong draws to this recreational property in Mexico.
Not surprisingly, the bigger-than-you-think Baja also boasts undiscovered places and, for a lack of a better way to put it, somewhat undiscovered places as well. Loreto and Danzante Bay fit comfortably into that latter category.
Thanks to its tiny airport and only a handful of developments and resorts, the area promises to remain somewhat under the radar for years to come. “The first place you’ll want to look for your seaside property is Danzante Bay,” says Hutchings, who currently lives in Cambridge, Ont., but spends as much time as possible on the Baja. “A perfect day for us here is a round of golf in the morning followed by some kayaking on the Sea of Cortez in the afternoon. In the evening, we’ll often close out our day with a glass of wine on the patio as the sun sets over the surrounding mountains.”A 750-acre master-planned resort and residential community in a peaceful, mountain-framed bay, Danzante Bay is currently selling home sites averaging half-an-acre in size in two distinct neighbourhoods — El Cardon and Canyon. The spacious lots and beautiful homes, with four models to choose from, take full advantage of the stunning views of the golf course, ocean, desert and mountains. Finished homes with lot start at $1.8 million USD and there are approximately 50 lots remaining in the first two initial phases.Article content The sleek and contemporary desert-style homes were designed by renowned Arizona-based architect, Kevin Howard. They range in size from 2,400 to 4,300 square feet of air-conditioned space. Not surprisingly, given the climate, they are all open designs that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces. The low-profile adobe-style homes are also designed to blend beautifully into the surrounding rock and natural colours of the region. Additional housing phases are also being planned and a large condo project — the Mantarraya Residences — near the private Owner’s Beach Club are also being offered. Two-bedroom units start at $460,000 USD and include private elevator access, 1,700 square feet of living space, parking and private pool, spa and barbecues for each building of 43 units. The condo project is currently 50 per cent sold. Although ground was first broken at Danzante Bay more than a decade ago, the resort and community has not yet reached the halfway point in terms of its development. Article content “The amenities here are also a major selling point,” says Hutchings, who is in the middle of building his dream retirement home at Danzante Bay. “Eventually, we will be applying for permanent residency visas in Mexico and we hope to live at Danzante Bay year round. The beach, kayaking, snorkelling, paddle boarding, and hiking in and around the bay are absolutely amazing. And the quality of the golf course is definitely another main reason why we chose Danzante Bay.” Designed by architect Rees Jones, dubbed by many “The Open Doctor” for his design work on numerous US Open venues, the TPC Danzante Bay layout is phenomenal from start to finish. Winding through rock and cacti-peppered ravines and meandering to the sea on two occasions, the golf experience here rivals anything in Mexico. The 17th hole is, unquestionably, one of the most spectacular golf holes in the world. From a tiny cliff-side shelf, golfers hit down to a green sitting on a tiny peninsula that juts out into the sea. If you haven’t seen this hole on a poster or in a calendar, rest assured, it won’t be long before you do. “I was also really impressed with the architectural designs of the homes and the smaller size of the development,” says Hutchings, who owns an industrial manufacturing company in Ontario. “Our custom home is nearing completion and we can hardly wait until we really call this place home.”
